Only in The Sims World – Sick with Guinea Pig Disease

The world of The Sims—the wildly popular computer game that puts the player at the helm of a fictional world—is said to parallel our own. Like in our society, the characters in The Sims range from partygoers to straight-laced business people. They have wants, needs, desires and motives like we do. Part of the attraction of playing a game like The Sims is precisely the ‘realness’ of the game. There is also a lot of fun in being able to control what all your characters do. Our real lives rarely feel so controlled, so it can be a break from the daily routine to sit down and play a game where the player feels a modicum of control over what will happen next. How many of us can go through the day with as much control over our own lives? So The Sims world provides us with a sense of controlled destiny. It gives us a glimpse into a world that is similar to ours. It is just real enough to make the game exciting, but just fantastical and unrealistic enough to keep things interesting and entertaining.

Perhaps one of the greatest examples of the sometimes-fantastical nature of the Sims universe is the presence of Guinea Pig Disease. It’s not the presence of the disease that initially threw so many Sims gamers off. We can all probably believe that, yes, it is indeed possible to become catch some kind of disease from a pet guinea pig. The complete randomness of this illness is what catches so many Sims gamers completely off guard. The disease sometimes seems to come out of nowhere. How do you know if your Sims characters have contracted this strange and nasty disease? The symptoms sometimes seem to come out of nowhere. Your character will suddenly start to cough and wheeze. Of course, if your Sims character has had any kind of interaction with a guinea pig, you will have to assume that they have contracted guinea pig disease. The guinea pig disease in the Sims afflicts characters who have handled the animal or who have neglected the cage-cleaning duty that inevitably goes with the territory of caring for such a pet. The first signs of the disease appear to resemble a cold: coughing, wheezing and general feelings of bodily unease. Once the disease takes hold, the symptoms generally become more pronounced. If action is not taken to care for the afflicted Sims character, the possibility of death is not unreasonable.

Like so many real-life diseases, the best protection from guinea pig disease is prevention. To prevent your Sims characters from contracting this nasty disease, make sure you get them to clean the guinea pig cage on a regular basis. Also, have your Sims character handle the guinea pig with care. The disease is usually contracted when a guinea pig that is housed in a dirty cage bites a character. Death by guinea pig disease is not the way that most Sims players want their characters to go. Keep the cages clean to keep this Sims life-threatening disease at bay.

With that said, if it’s too late and one of your characters has already contracted the disease, take heart. There are at least three known ways to cure guinea pig disease in the Sims games. The first and simplest way is to buy a guinea pig painting. The second way is to provide your Sims character with lots of bed rest and healthy food. Most of the time, characters can be slowly nursed back to health. The third option for curing guinea pig disease requires a bit of luck. You can use the chemistry set provided in the Living Large expansion pack to have your character develop a white potion—the antidote to guinea pig disease.
