Holy Matrimony for The Sims – How Marriage Works in their World

Published by Author at 4:35 pm under The Sims

It’s true that the Sims are tiny virtual mirrors of us: they have to pay their bills, learn to cook, make and keep friends, get careers, maybe get married and get kids, and eventually die. Even though the Sims can be remarkably realistic in many ways, holy matrimony in the Sims is not entirely parallel to our experience with this ancient institution. When it comes to getting married, the Sims experience does not always reflect the way it happens out here in the real world.

Here is a brief overview of how marriage works in the popular Sims games. First, before you Sims characters even begin to consider marriage, they must fulfill several requirements. One of these requirements is that they must be friends before getting married. In fact, friendship operates as a fundamental requirement to marriage in the Sims. The two characters must have a relationship score of at least 70 in order to be considered marriage material.

Once your characters have established a solid friendship and earned at least 70 relationship points, it’s time to get them up close and personal with one another. Get your Sims characters to become more intimate with each other through hugging and kissing. This will help turn up the heat in the relationship, another requirement on the road to marriage. Once your characters have reached this level, it is now relatively safe to have one of the characters propose marriage. The proposal action can sometimes be a little tricky. If you want to make sure that the other character accepts, make sure they are in a good mood when the proposal happens. Make sure all of their motives are met. If the character is hungry, has to go to the bathroom, or is not having his or her motives met in some other fundamental kind of way, there is a palpable chance that they will turn down the proposal. However, even if your character seems happy and content, this does not always ensure an automatic acceptance of the marriage proposal.

So, you managed to get the other character in a good mood, and the proposal has been accepted. Do the Sims go through a long period of planning before the big day arrives? Do they worry about dresses and caterers and flowers like most engaged couples? No! This is one of the main differences that users have noted between Sims life and our lives. Once the marriage proposal has been accepted, it is customary that the Sims be immediately married. In fact, they automatically change into their wedding clothes, and the marriage act is completed. Call it swift and efficient. Once the marriage is over, one of the Sims character will move in with the other. The two character’s bank accounts will be combined. The name of the Sim who is moving in will be changed. If one of the newly-married characters is a single parent, the child (or children) will move in as well.

Here’s another way that married life in the Sims is different from our experience. Once the Sims characters have joined in holy matrimony, there is usually no turning back. There is no such thing as divorce in the Sims universe. Strangely enough, there is the possibility of re-marriage. Even if two of your characters are married, this does not necessarily impede them from marrying once again. In fact, your Sims characters can marry several times. Some Sims gamers have counted that a male Sim character can have up to seven different wives. Female Sims characters can also marry several times, although apparently no one has counted to see if there is a limit to this number.
