Naked or Not – The Deal with The Sims Nudity
Maybe you’ve heard about nudity in the Sims, or maybe it comes as a complete surprise to you. The news broke in early 2005: hackers had created a patch that allowed the popular Sims characters to bare it all. How did this happen? Who was responsible for this racy Sims nudity? The idea of Sims nudity appears to have developed from dedicated Sims fans and gamers wanted to push the boundaries of the Sims g-rated status. Other g-rated off the shelf games have also proven fodder for naught hackers. Two of the most famous Sims players who have helped create clothing-optional Sims characters are Kamma Nielsen and Love Ablan.
Nielson lives in Denmark and creating nude Sims characters has become one of her greatest hobbies. She operates her own website where other Sims fans can go and download nude Sims skins. Skins are essentially the nude character designs that other gamers need to download in order to replace the Sims characters clothes with nothing at all. Nielson has achieved minor celebrity through her website. The other Sims gamer who has developed nude skins and characters is Love Ablan, a New York-based artist. Ablan has not only developed nude character skins and nude characters, but racy situations and settings as well.
How do the video game companies feel about all this tinkering with their games? Electronic Arts Inc. is the company responsible for the vastly popular Sims franchise. Perhaps not surprisingly, Electronic Arts has always condoned the development of Sims patches and downloads. The company understands that the immense popularity of the Sims franchise has created a vibrant Internet community where fans can develop and share downloads and patches. Even though the company has never voiced objection to these popular fan sites or downloads, they have tried to distance themselves from the most controversial sites and developments. The company has publicly stated that they will not host sites that provide Sims nudity skins or similarly racy material, or link to such sites. However the company has made it clear that they will not pass any kind of moral judgment over their fans.
How do Sims fans go about creating this manipulations and patches? Most Sims enthusiasts use popular programs such as Adobe Photoshop or other popular image manipulation software programs. There are also free programs such as the popular BodyWarp program that was created by game enthusiasts and is available online for download. Users who create patches, utility programs, or other features that allow gamers to manipulate the game will usually provide their creations online for free or pay download. Downloading these patches and programs can sometimes require some degree of technical knowledge. Most of the time downloading patches or programs simply requires the user to download and install an update to the game program.
Although the developments of nude skins have captured most of the attention from gamers and the press, there are plenty of patches available out there that are not quite so controversial or titillating in nature. In fact, most of the patches and skins out there don’t have anything to do with nudity. Most patches simply allow players to manipulate certain aspects of the game. For instance, many of the patches simply allow the player a greater degree of control and customization over the game.
However, if nude Sims are what captures your attention, it is easy enough to find and download such patches. Most websites contain warnings about the nature of the skins and advocate that their use be reserved for users over 18 years of age. Most websites, however, don’t use any kind of age verification device. Nude characters for The Sims abound online, and you can also inevitably find similar skins for other popular computer games.
